Red_canoeETV’s Knowitall.org Launches a Trek Through South Carolina’s Waterways
“Richard Bernabe’s RiverVenture Journal” Braves the Rapids Beginning Thursday, Sept. 6

Columbia, SC…On Thursday, Sept. 6, ETV and award-winning photojournalist Richard Bernabe set sail on a 250-mile river adventure that couples the energy of the great outdoors with the thrill of discovery.

Traveling across the state by canoe on this expedition, Bernabe abandons the highways and byways in favor of South Carolina’s rivers and lakes. More than just a personal passion, however, he wanted to make this trip an amazing educational experience as well. So, the consummate outdoorsman approached ETV and its educational Web site RiverVenture, a virtual “float-trip” that allows teachers and students to explore several of the Palmetto State’s rivers.

The resulting partnership is Richard Bernabe’s RiverVenture Journal, an interactive site where river hounds can keep track of Bernabe’s location via GPS, chat with him through a blog, as well as view his video journal and stunning nature photography — all by going to www.riverventure.org.

“I’ve never traveled across the state in a canoe before and I don’t know what to expect… I want the teachers and students who come along for the adventure to experience that same wonder. What a great way to see the state,” says Bernabe. Ultimately, he hopes that students and teachers, “feel like they’re traveling with me as I see the state from this amazingly different perspective.”

Launching at the Broad River on the border of North and South Carolina, the approximately-month-long trip will follow Bernabe as he snakes his way through the heavily wooded Sumter National Forest, into Columbia’s Congaree National Park, beneath the great cypress stands of the Rimini Swamp, through the enormous Lakes Marion and Moultrie, and dropping anchor in the Cooper River in Charleston. Along the way, Bernabe will highlight the environmental, cultural and historic aspects of South Carolina as well as engage in casual conversations with park rangers and others he meets on his journey.

“It’s a different way to see the state,” says Bernabe. “Instead of 55 miles per hour on the highway, I’ll travel in a canoe.”
