A dam on the Saluda River releases a surge of water that flows downstream into the Congaree River. Richard learns that a few feet of water equals a great amount of flooding…in the floodplain.

Richard gets back on the river after a layover in Columbia. Columbia is in the area of the Fall Line or Fall Zone of South Carolina, an unusual landform transition where the Piedmont and Sandhills landforms drop into the Coastal Plain. The Fall Line is marked by rocky rapids and followed by flat floodplain landscapes.

Feral Hogs

Evidence of feral hogs can be seen throughout the Congaree Swamp. Their aggressive eating habits disrupt the food chain of native species, while their rooting and grazing turns up soil leaving it exposed and prone to erosion.

The Ship

Barges transporting commodities between Columbia and Charleston traveled the Congaree in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Richard discovers the hull of one of these boats in this video.
